The Key Monastery is one of the oldest monasteries located in the Spiti Valley region near Kaza. The Key Monastery is located at a height of around 4166 meters are above sea level. Once you reach the top of the Key Monastery, you will be able to get glimpse of the stunning views of the surrounding mountain ranges and the scenic landscape.
The Key Monastery was built in the 11th century by Dromtom who was the student of the Buddhist preacher, Atisha. The Key Monastery has withstood many attacks, earthquakes and fires, but despite that it has been able to hold a strong presence in the area.
The monastery comprises of a castle with rooms, the monastery comprises of multiple stories built on top of one another, forming a maze-like structure. The monastery comprises of many ancient scriptures, murals, paintings, manuscripts and artifacts. The Key Monastery is a learning hub for Buddhism, and around 300 monks live here. These monks belong to the Gelugpa sect; they learn Buddhism and engage in gaining spiritualism.
To visit Key Monastery the best time to visit is from May to September when the climate is favorable, and the roads are open. Avoid traveling during the winter season due to heavy snowfall.
Travelers planning to visit Key Monastery will have to take a bus or taxi from Manali to Kaza by travelling through the route Manali-Leh Highway. If coming from Shimla, you will have to take the Hindustan-Tibet Road (NH-22) route. Once they reach Kaza, the Key Monastery is 14 km away.

Chandratal Lake is situated a bit faraway from Kaza, it is located at a height of around 4300 feet above sea level. As the name suggests the shape of the lake is in moon shape.
